Religious Trauma

Religious trauma is real. So is your power to heal

If you’ve grown up in a high-control faith, survived spiritual abuse, or are struggling with the impact of leaving religion, you may be carrying invisible wounds that run deep, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually.

Religious trauma doesn’t just affect what you believe, it can impact your sense of self, your nervous system, your relationships, and your ability to trust your own inner knowing.

I offer trauma-informed, body-based therapy for people who are ready to begin healing from the complex and often misunderstood experience of religious trauma.

“When we are not seen, heard, and understood, we are wounded at the very core of our being.”

- Dr. Gabor Maté. -

What is religious trauma?

Religious trauma often arises in environments where fear, guilt, shame, and control were used in the name of spiritual growth. Whether through purity culture, coercive teachings, authoritarian leaders, or simply being taught to distrust yourself — the effects can last for years.

Common symptoms include:

  • Chronic guilt or anxiety

  • Loss of identity or direction

  • Hyper vigilance, fear of punishment, or fear of hell

  • Difficulty trusting yourself or others

  • Disconnection from your body or emotions

  • Struggles with sexuality or relationship boundaries

  • Feeling numb, spiritually lost, or confused

You don’t need to have left religion entirely to be affected. Many clients I work with are still in religious communities, or are in the early stages of questioning.

I appreciate that Ewan has been very real with me and present during our sessions. He does not keep himself at a distance playing the role of “therapist’ like some that I have worked with. Ewan possesses a natural talent
and skill for healing work coupled with a genuine heartfelt concern for people. I would highly recommend him.

My Approach

I combine lived experience with professional training in trauma recovery, somatic therapy, and Gestalt practice. My work is present-focused, compassionate, and always led by your pace and needs.

  • Somatic & body-based therapy (e.g. Safe and Sound Protocol, tremoring)

  • Inner child & attachment repair

  • Non-pathologising exploration of belief and identity.

  • Mindfulness & nervous system regulation

  • Deep respect for your spiritual freedom

I also bring my own journey to this work. I spent years in a high-control spiritual
community that became psychologically and spiritually abusive. Leaving was painful, but healing was possible, and now, I support others walking that same path. You can visit my website, which is dedicated solely to healing religious trauma. I’m also a therapist listed on www.religioustruamcounseling.com and one of these contributors to its YouTube
channel.

"The religion of obedience creates the false self. Healing requires us to reconnect with the truth of our own feelings, even when they go against everything we were taught."
